Relations to Animal Farm
Snowball was a young, smart and strong speaking pig who represents Leon Trotsky in the Russian revolution. He hoped for a better future for his comrades. Despite his good intentions he and Trotsky were both chased out from their homes by the villains of the stories Napoleon and Stalin. They were sent away and banned from ever returning.
Leon Trotsky’s story is extremely similar to Snowball’s. They have both led revolutions: Battle of Cowshed, Bolshevik Revolution 1917. They both had important roles in different revolutions but was betrayed by their comrades Napoleon and Stalin. Trotsky was the founder of the Red Army which was said without it the Bolshevik Revolution would not have been successful. Snowball planned, led and fought in the Battle of Cowshed. Both revolutions were successful and was supposed to lead to a better life.
They both had great plans for the future of their countries. Trotsky had the idea of a Five Years plan similar to Snowball’s windmill plan. The plans were both made for a better future for their people. But both plans were opposed by Stalin and Napoleon. We learn that Napoleon despises the idea at one point he “urinated over the plans and walked out without a word.” (Chp 5) Trotsky was the first to advocate the idea of the Five Years plan but it was opposed by Stalin and his followers. After Snowball and Trotsky’s exile Napoleon and Stalin took the plans and implemented them. [3] [1]

Why did George Orwell represent the character in the way he did? How successful was he?
The story of Trotsky and Snowball was extremely similar. Snowball was portrayed in a strangely positive manner, every other animal was either described as a villain or simple minded creatures that are easily manipulated, but Snowball had an impression of good and honesty. George Orwell was part of a Troskyist group in the late 1930’s. He supported Trotsky’s ideas and was against Stalin’s rule in the USSR. This could be why Snowball is portrayed in a positive manner.
