Relations to Animal Farm
Animal Farm parallels the Russian revolution of 1917. The propaganda happening at the time was represented through speeches made by the smarter animals of the farm - the pigs. Propaganda was an important factor for both the Russian revolution and the story Animal farm. They were both used to keep the uneducated working in order to increase their loyalty to their nation and to provide wealth to the higherups.
The pigs of Animal Farm kept the other animals wary of their enemies (Mr Jones, Snowball). One example would be them ending a conversation with “surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?” (Chap 3) This is a use of propaganda because it is a phrase that none of the animals could response to making them believe whatever the pigs said before to be true and is done to stop Jones from ever coming back. Another quote from the story “Discipline comrades, iron discipline! That is the watchword for today. One false step, and our enemies would be upon us. Surely, comrades, you do not want Jones back" (P. 60) Again Squealer used Jones as a reason to have the animals believe in disciplining themselves and following the pig’s orders. This is a clever use of propaganda by using the fear of Jones returning to order the animals around. [4]
This poster is from the Five Years Plans. It is likely published by Stalin and his man. Its translates "Let's build the Dirigible fleet in Lenin's name." This is meant for people to feel like building an airship because Lenin would have wanted one. The people of Russia respected Lenin, and Stalin used this to have the people work. This picture shows a very grand and colorful future for the USSR giving the message if they had airships they will strive. The poster said “in Lenin’s name” Stalin used Lenin as a reason to work similar to Squealer using the animal’s fear of Jones returning as a reason to labor. Both leaders Napoleon and Stalin uses mind tricks to deceive their citizens into working for their ideals. [8]
Squealer, napoleon’s right hand man is much like the Propaganda Department of Lenin’s government. He talked a lot convinced animals to follow Napoleon without doubt. He also also manipulated the Seven Commandants by adding extra words to it fooling the simple minded animals of the farm. The department worked to support Stalin’s image they lie to have people support him. The dogs were much like the KGB the secret police. While the propaganda department controlled the people verbally and through poster the KGB cooperates with them but they do this through fear. The KGB killed all opposers and were both extremely loyal to heir leaders. All of them were tools to propaganda. [7] [13]

Why did George Orwell represent the system in the way he did? How successful was he?
I think Orwell made so much detail in the description of propaganda in Animal farm to show people the truth and for us to recognize the mistakes of the past. He tries to explain power corruption through the story and the mistake of the people to have believed in him. The influence this book made on the world’s politics is unclear. But reading this book gave a much clearer insight on the people and events that went on under Stalin’s rule. This proves it to be successful in telling the story of the Russian Revolution.
